How does one acquire a SIM card in Namibia?
The best way is to purchase one at the airport from the MTC company, which has good reception throughout the country, with a package of Super Aweh, which is three giga. The moment it runs out, it is possible to load and purchase more packages of Super Aweh at any supermarket or gas station. Of course, you can also buy a SIM card there, which costs 6 namibi; the Super Aweh costs 65 namibi.
The International airport of Namibia, “Hosea Kutako International Airport”, is located approximately forty-two kilometers away from the capital, Windhoek.
Following are a number of ways to reach the city.
If you wish to travel by bus:
Taxi: One can get a cab into town for 25-30 dollars each way. Inside Windhoek, a cab ride costs about 2-3 dollars each direction. (If you ask the reception desk to order the cab, they charge a fee.)
In town, we recommend using an application called LEFA, which is like a local Uber. You will be able to travel safely in the city. Payment is by application or in cash after the ride.
Car rental: You are probably planning your trip a few months ahead of time, so you can have your car waiting for you at the airport and you will save yourself several hours of roaming around.
On your right, when you leave the airport, you will see a large number of car rental booths, where you will be able to pick up the car you ordered.
The prices offered by the various car rental companies range from 80 to 120 dollars a day. The deposit varies from company to company. Prices are not set, and they go up according to the demand.
Namibia is an untroubled country, and one can roam its streets without fear.
In Windhoek, the capital, it is recommended to remain in the hotel at night and to travel with official taxis.
It is always recommended to maintain basic safety rules:
- Large sums of money and vital documents should be stored in the hotel’s safe.
- Be alert in places where there are crowds.
The recommended way to travel in Namibia is by a 4 X 4 vehicle. It is a good idea to have a spare tire in case you need one.
Just to be on the safe side, make a note of Namibia’s emergency numbers:

Happily enough, starting from Iyar 5783/May 2023, there is a law stating that Israeli passports can receive a visa upon arrival at the airports at Windhoek and Walvis Bay. The cost is 70 U.S. Dollars. The fee can be paid in cash or by credit card.
In addition, one must produce flight and exit tickets from the country, as well as a list of your planned hotels and car rentals/attractions.
When arriving by land or any other way, you must arrange a visa ahead of time in the Namibian Embassy.
This can be done in Pretoria, Cape Town (South Africa) or in countries near Namibia. It is recommended to send them an email ahead of time to make sure they are open on the days when you will need their services.
